Finding Money?
You (Already) Have What It Takes!

You already have the basic ingredients for applying for free money: professional goals statement, letters of recommendation, lists (or descriptions) of professional and extracurricular/community activities, and transcripts. A little tweaking and you can recycle these basic elements of your UCSF admissions application into scholarship applications.

Here’s how to get ready to apply for free money in seven to eight 30 minute sessions (don’t try this in one sitting!):

  • Update professional goals statement
  • Update resume or C.V. (add all your honors, awards, scholarships, community service, memberships…)
  • Approach likely UCSF faculty about whether s/he can write you a favorable letter; ask if s/he wants a first draft and updated C.V. to work from.
  • Draft a letter of recommendation about yourself (or ask a loved one to help); writing about yourself, in glowing terms, might be tough. Allow two 30 minute sessions?
  • Contact those who wrote reference letters for your UCSF application to learn if they would be willing to send a slightly revised letter for your scholarship applications
  • Review copies of the S/N Update (you’ll find an entire year’s worth on the web); create your list of targeted scholarships and/or grants.
  • Schedule the application deadlines on your calendar. Also schedule reminders to secure applications forms, transcripts, and get materials to those submitting letters of reference. Schedule blocks of time to work on the applications and get to the post office.

Okay, it’s about four hours later. You’re ready to go!

FEE REMISSION for TAs and RAs

This is a reminder that if you work 25% or more as a Research Assistant or Postgraduate RA, you are eligible for full fee remission. If you work 25% or more as a Teaching Assistant, you are eligible for partial fee remission. However, please note that this remission does not apply to the Professional Fees that Master’s Students pay each quarter.

If you agree to serve as a Research or Teaching Assistant before a quarter starts, your Department (FHCN, CHS, PN, or SBS) will complete a form to Graduate Division. Upon approval they will ask the Registrar to remove the "fee card" from your Registration packet.

If the deadline for submitting the form to Graduate Division has passed and if you have already paid your fees, you may be reimbursed by submitting the canceled check to your department. If you are paid in this way, the reimbursement for fees is taxable.

In either of the above cases, you are responsible for making sure you work 25% time during the quarter. Each quarter has a different number of working hours. For example, Winter 2002 has 512 working hours and you need to work 128 hours; Spring 2002 has 520 and you need to work 130 hours. If you do not work the prescribed number of hours, the Accounting Office will notify the Department at the end of the quarter and ask for reimbursement.

Because each department has its own procedure and deadlines for payroll, please check with the payroll assistant in your department.

Student Financial Services

The 2002-03 financial aid deadline for Option B applicants (Stafford, Nursing, Perkins, University loans) is February 1. The UCSF financial aid application is submitted to SFSO; the FAFSA is to be submitted to the government processor. Students may use estimated figures on the FAFSA form.

Option A applicants (Stafford, private loans only) have a spring deadline date to submit their materials.

A complete, signed copy of the student’s (and spouse’s) 2001 federal tax return is due no later than May 1 for both Option A and B applicants. A limited supply of commonly-used 2001 federal tax returns and schedules are available in the SFSO lobby-area near the elevator.

New applicants for financial aid who are under 30 years of age must submit parents’ information if applying for Option B funds. Information needed includes pages 7-8 of the UCSF financial aid application and a complete, signed copy of the 2001 federal tax return. Parent materials are due March 18.

Diplomas, Degrees, and Credentials

In OSA, students frequently ask us what the difference is between a degree and a credential. The difference, in short, is that a degree is granted by the University, and a credential by a credentialing body (such as the Board of Registered Nursing). In other words, you do not become a Nurse Practitioner by completing a program in primary care at UCSF but rather only after applying for and receiving certification from an outside agency.

On your diploma, you will find the words "Master of Science" or "Doctor of Philosophy." All graduates of this School will be awarded either the MS degree or the PhD degree. You will not find "MS in Community Health Nursing" or "MS in Oncology Nursing," etc. It would be most accurate to say that you specialized in "Community Health Nursing" or "Oncology Nursing" but this should not be confused with the actual degree.

Last, but not least, at the University of California, one can only get one Master of Science in Nursing or Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing degree. In some cases, a student may have a dual major (specializing in Adult NP and Oncology, for example,) but a dual major is not the same as a dual degree!
